Barbara Jo Fletcher Provost, 90, of Melbourne, FL, passed away at William Childs Hospice House on July
15, 2024, with her loving family by her side. Barbara Jo (a/k/a “Jo-Bob”), the youngest child of Charles
Lawrence Fletcher and Virgie Bounds Fletcher, was born on November 29, 1933, in Big Stone Gap, VA.
She was a graduate of Big Stone Gap High School and Lincoln Memorial University, where she was an
active member of her beloved sorority, Zeta Tau Kappa. While visiting family in Boston, she met the
love of her life, George P. Provost, on a blind date. They were married in 1956 and together raised four
children, Eric L. Provost (Ellen), Suzanne P. du Pont, Vincent R. Provost (Lucy), and Yvonne P. Mitten
(Tod). The family lived in many places, including the Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia suburbs until
George’s death in 1982. She later retired to Chadds Ford, PA, before moving to Florida with family.
She began her career as a teacher, and later became a homemaker. Devoted to her children, she
served in many volunteer roles, including Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, and various PTA
positions. She later became a dedicated and long-time employee of Sears and Roebuck Company.
Energetic, outgoing, and witty, Jo enjoyed sewing, birdwatching, reading, crossword puzzles and the
television program “Jeopardy!”. She was jokingly referred to as the “Chief of the Grammar Police.” Jo
adored her nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six siblings,
with whom she shared a tremendous bond. She was also predeceased by a beloved son-in-law. In
addition to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, she is survived by many cherished
nieces, nephews, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the Zeta Tau Kappa Alumnae Endowed Scholarship
