Damary Mercado November 18, 1950 – May 31, 2024 Daughter of Domingo Mercado Pérez and Virginia Martinez Caldelaro,
Damary was born in Yauco, Puerto Rico.
Damary was an extraordinary woman who faced life’s challenges with resilience. She raised her three children alone while paying her way through college. Her children were always her top priority.
One of her significant achievements was pioneering the pre-K Headstart program for three-year-olds in Detroit, Michigan. While attending Wayne County University, she studied psychology and completed her teaching degree.
During this time, she also became a teacher, educating all three of her children. She remained dedicated to her faith, teaching her children the importance of church and eventually becoming a pastor in Detroit. While working with the mentally challenged, she earned her master’s degree in psychology. Later, she moved to Florida and worked with the Orange County School District, where she became the president of the Orange County Public School Union. Additionally, she was a CPR instructor and a notary public, all while earning multiple bachelor’s degrees.
