Daniel H Cross

I met Dan when I was 17, working in a coffee shop outside of McGuire Air Force Base, NJ. He came in one night with a friend in their uniforms. He told me that if he got good service, I would get a 5-dollar tip (a lot in '64). Well, I didn't do so well - forgot dinner roll and a few other things, so he said my tip was down to 50 cents. He told his friend that he was going to marry me. He kept coming into the shop and tearing off the paper from straws and writing poems to me. He also liked pineapple topping on chocolate ice cream. Weird to me for sure. He asked to take me home one night, and my Dad said yes. I waited and waited for him to show up, and he never did. I didn't see him for three days. When he did show up, he said he was in a bad car accident and showed me three scratches on his ear. I didn't believe him, but he finally convinced me since his friend he was with was still in the hospital. He got out of the service and traveled many times from VT to NJ. One night, I spent the night at my girlfriend's house, and he came knocking at her door after finding out where I was. He had a 5 and dime store ring and asked her to marry him. It was big and gaudy. He was playing a prank. I didn't know what was going on. He proposed to me with a real diamond ring.
We had many adventures throughout our 61 years of marriage, which included hunting, which he loved, camping, mountain climbing, sky diving, river rafting, starting a few businesses, running a motel, and traveling through most of the 48 states. I was blessed to spend those years with my soulmate. I will miss him and his humor and his love.
