Irene Luitgard Cash

Obituary for Irene L. Cash Irene was residing in Melbourne Florida, formally from Hackettstown, NJ died Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at Brookdale Memory Care, West Melbourne, FL after a long journey with Alzheimer's. Irene was predeceased by her husband James B. Cash. Born and raised in Schweinfurt, Germany to Robert and Amanda Schmitt and is preceded by two older sisters whom she loved, Ill and Elizabeth. Irene had an adventurous life, traveling on her own to America at the age of 21, working as an international operator for AT&T, and connecting phone calls including Frank Sinatra and Elenor Rosevelt. She met the love of her life, Jim, a Bronx-born Irishman through mutual friends, and married in 1961. Through their marriage, they lived on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx, Falls Church, VA, Chatham, NJ, and Long Valley, NJ until their retirement in Roseto, PA. While raising a family, Irene and Jim were active in the community, Irene being a member of the Rosary Altar Society. Irene and Jim were their admiration society as Irene was proud of the talents Jim had, and Jim admired Irene's Beauty, Charm, and Talents. Irene was an avid cook, knitter, and hostess, and enjoyed her long-standing group of friends from Chatham dubbed the Stich and bitch group. Irene made her own Drapes and beautiful sweaters, and stockings for all the grandchildren. She enjoyed fashion, jewelry, playing cards, and almost any social event. Her children benefitted from her culture as she spoke four languages and took the family to her homeland of Germany several times as they grew up. Irene became a US Citizen in 1991. Surviving: son, James T. Cash and wife Mary Cash of Hackettstown,NJ, daughters, Deborah Pollock and husband Tim Pollock of Palm Bay, FL and Christina Higgins and her husband Mark Higgins of Hackettstown, NJ, twelve grandchildren, Nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by daughter Marina, sisters Illa Kortz and Elizabeth Schmitt of Germany. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Assumption Church in Hackettstown at 12:15 PM on May 11th, followed by burial in New Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Roseto, PA, and a repass at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Hackettstown following the service. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
